MAPS is an acronym for Making Adventures - Preserving Stewardship. That's also what we "stand for" in the sense of our purpose. We make adventures for those who might not get the opportunity otherwise. We make a way for youth with a desire to go on their first hunting trip, but with no one in their life to provide that opportunity, to have that chance. We develop methods for someone with a cognitive disability to participate in an adventure they never thought possible. We create opportunites for making lifelong friendships with people living life on similar paths. We get people educated and activated in stewardship in their life, their families, their communities, and the great outdoors of Florida.
Yes. No minor will be left unattended without a vetted adult volunteer at any time. This means that mentors assigned to accompany a minor will be required to have first completed a comprehensive background check, mentor training, and have all required hunting and fishing licenses verified. The comprehensive background check or a reverification must have been completed within the preceding 12 months. The comprehensive background check will include the following security background investigation items:
The screening standards will be the same as the "Level 2" screening standards found in Florida Statute 435.04. Fingerprints are not required for our background checks.
Yes. However, comprehensive background checks are only required for volunteers who will be with minors unsupervised. All other volunteers will be required to complete a basic background check.
All volunteers are required to complete MAPS Inc basic training. This training includes courses in defining sexual abuse, identifying victim identifying characteristics, identifying characteristics of sexual abusers, how to make a difference, and responsibility and reporting. In addition, some volunteer positions will require specialized training such as hunter safety, boater safety, land navigation, first aid, etc.
The same ones available to everyone! We provide adventures such as kayak tours, snorkeling, canoe trips, hunting and fishing, and much more. We also host social events specifically for meeting and making new friends with similar interests. We strive to develop ways to get anyone on any adventure they want to participate in regardless of their disability, while making safety and positive experiences the top priority.
Absolutely! We'd love to have you join us. You might even consider becoming a volunteer and lending a hand at the same time.
Not a dime. Well, that's not exactly true. Our generous sponsors and donors cover the costs of our adventures and events, so the participants don't have to pay at all.
